The History of Stewarts

Queensland has changed a lot in a hundred years, and Stewarts has changed with it. Over this time, the Stewart family has been involved in numerous ventures in and around Brisbane.

From CJ starting his railway refreshment room in Landsborough, ending up with three in 3 years, the Stewarts went on to operate the catering facilities at Eagle Farm Racecourse for some 75 years, as well as, at different times, the Criterion Hotel for 50 years, the Osbourne Hotel, Highway (Rocklea) HotelAlbionHamilton, and Springwood Hotels.

Stewarts also catered to many of Queensland’s largest events in recent times, in particular, the 1982 Commonwealth Games, including a massive reception for Queen Elizabeth II at the Queensland Art Gallery. Finally, Stewarts are particularly proud of CJ for creating what was possibly the first liquor home-delivery service in the world in 1922, Stewarts Home Supply.

After a period of consolidation in the late 70’s, the family decided to regroup. The 80’s and 90’s, saw Stewarts mirror the growth of Queensland by expanding its operations.

Since the beginning of the new century, Stewarts has realised some of its operations, to focus on enhancing quality and service.
